Iraqi Drone Strike Results in Over Two Dozen Israeli Casualties

Resistance groups in Iraq have escalated their attacks on Israeli and U.S. strategic targets, showing support for Lebanon and Palestine.


On 4 October, the Israeli army confirmed that a drone attack launched by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) on Thursday left two Israeli soldiers dead and 24 others injured in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.


According to an Israeli military investigation, two explosive-laden drones were deployed from Iraq. While one was intercepted by air defenses, the second struck a military base in the northern Golan Heights. Reports from the Times of Israel indicate that air raid sirens failed to go off as the second drone entered Israeli-occupied Syrian territory.


In addition to the two soldiers killed, 24 others sustained injuries, with two in serious condition, one moderately wounded, and 21 suffering minor injuries.

Resistance factions aligned with Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) and operating under the IRI have ramped up their assaults on Israeli positions in recent weeks in a show of solidarity with Lebanon and Palestine.


On Friday, the IRI claimed responsibility for drone attacks on three locations in Tiberias and the Golan Heights, describing it as the "most severe attack" among the more than 180 launched against Israel since November 2023.

“The armed factions are fully equipped and ready for a prolonged regional conflict. Any escalation in Hezbollah’s war with Israel will inevitably pull us into an open war without limitations. The resistance is prepared to move into Lebanon or carry out deep strikes inside Israel if necessary,” said Ali al-Mahdi, an IRI commander, in a statement to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.


Just days before, Abu Ali al-Askari, a commander of the Kataib Hezbollah faction, urged all resistance groups in Iraq supporting Palestine and Lebanon to "increase the scope and intensity of their operations against the enemy," aiming to break the military and security resolve of Israel.


Additionally, the IRI has heightened its strikes on U.S. occupation bases in both Syria and Iraq.
